Mapping What’s Missing: A Workshop on Urban Nature and Community Cartography
About this EventMapping Workshop with Charlie Peel (Urban Good)
Join us for a unique workshop that reimagines the neighbourhood of Aurora through creative mapping, storytelling, and community engagement. Over four hours, participants will explore the concept of urban nature — not just what’s visible, but also what’s missing or hidden in plain sight.
Led by Charlie Peel of London’s Urban Good CIC, this session invites creatives, urbanists, and curious minds to take part in a collaborative mapping process using open spatial data, hand-drawn sketches, and lived experience. Together, we’ll uncover stories, green traces, and future possibilities for a more nature-rich Aurora.
Workshop ScheduleIntroduction & ConceptsWe’ll start by introducing the ideas of urban nature, hyperlocalism, and citizen-led cartography — exploring how maps can reflect more than just geography.
Tools & InspirationGet to know mapping tools like QGIS and Illustrator, and discover examples of creative, community-centered maps from other cities.
Field Reflections & Live MappingWe’ll gather your personal observations, photos, and reflections (optional pre-task), and watch a live mapping process unfold — combining local stories with spatial data to build a new, expressive map of Aurora.
Discussion & Co-CreationYour contributions will help shape a shared visual narrative: a map that highlights green spaces, overlooked zones, and new ideas for connection and regeneration.
Who Should AttendIdeal for community members, urban planners, environmental advocates, designers, and anyone curious about the intersection of place, nature, and mapping. No prior experience needed — just a desire to explore.
